An iconic U.S. beach, travelers come from far and wide to see the wildlife at La Jolla Cove in California, whether it’s the coastline’s famous leopard sharks or sea lions. However, when peak summer tourist season coincides with the height of sea lion breeding season, it can cause the mammals to act territorial and aggressive towards beachgoers. Videos of sea lions chasing humans off the beach have long circulated online, but in this latest incident it’s the humans who are acting aggressively.
Recently, private Snapchat footage of a tourist punching and kicking a sea lion at La Jolla Cove went viral, leaving onlookers and commenters furious. Touching, feeding, or harassing sea lions is illegal, and demands for sea lion justice quickly rolled in. Many commenters echoed a similar sentiment, demanding justice with remarks like, “Please make him famous,” indicating that they wanted to reveal the identity of the young man who was filmed on camera attacking the animal.
Public Tries To Uncover The Identity Of The Sea Lion Hitter At La Jolla Cove
After the Snapchat video was shared publicly on Instagram, the public quickly went to work, attempting to identify the man throwing punches and kicks at the sea lion.
In the video, a young man can be seen in an all-white outfit attempting to kick-box with the sea lion. The animal continues to back away from the situation, while those filming can be heard laughing at the ordeal. The Snapchat username is also visible.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, several comments began tagging the same Instagram account, believing they had found the person from the video. That account has since been deleted from the platform.
Regardless of who did it, commenters were understandably outraged. Here’s what some had to say:

Although plenty of anger was directed at the culprit, others made sure to call out the city of San Diego, noting that more efforts need to be made on their part to find the man and deliver justice for the sea lion.
Sea Lion Conservation Efforts At La Jolla Not Taken Seriously
In 2024, during a local television interview, Bob Evans, the president of La Jolla Parks and Beaches, noted that these conflicts between sea lions and humans were worsening by the day.
“We want the beach to be exclusively for humans,” he said. “Every day that goes by, the risk is greater for people and wildlife. Every day that goes by, we lose part of our beach.”
Meanwhile, environmental and animal advocacy groups continually see conservation efforts ignored by locals and tourists. The Sierra Club Foundation, for example, asked the city to intervene years ago after three sea lion pups were found dead shortly after July 4th festivities.
“One of the pups was found on a public beach partially buried in the sand with the pincers of a lobster placed on its head as if they were horns,” the organization said in a statement, indicating that humans definitely played a role.
Reports from CBS show that La Jolla now has additional signage, increased ranger presence, and daily volunteers from Sierra Club Seal Society to help educate visitors and keep everyone safe.
However, many feel these efforts are not taken seriously. In some instances, volunteers are blatantly ignored, even when directly asking a visitor to back away from the sea lions and their pups. “It’s like a petting zoo, and nobody’s taking control,” animal advocate Kris Golojuch said after witnessing such an interaction.
The Sierra Club Seal Society estimates that ten sea lion pups have died at La Jolla Cove this year alone.
Advocates Call For NOAA Presence At La Jolla
Despite the efforts already made, inappropriate interactions with wildlife at La Jolla are still a concern. As a result, animal rights advocates are now calling for a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) officer to patrol the beach.
“If we could simply just get a NOAA officer down here for a couple weeks, they could write a handful of tickets… maybe it’ll keep people up off the sand,” Golojuch said.
In a statement obtained by CBS, the city of San Diego said, “Since the new signage was installed on May 18, Park Rangers have issued no citations related to approaching or disturbing sea lions at La Jolla Cove […] Visitors are encouraged to observe marine mammals from a respectful distance, remain aware of their surroundings, and never approach or position themselves near sea lions, particularly during this sensitive time of year.”
As for the man attempting to kickbox the sea lion, if identified, he could face serious consequences. Harassing sea lions at La Jolla Cove is a federal offense under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). Penalties for the crime can include a $30,000 fine per violation and up to one year in prison.
