It has been a chaotic past couple of days for travel in the U.S. All major carriers have been impacted by disruptions. United Airlines faced a tech outage, while Delta Air Lines canceled the most flights of any airline worldwide. The issues for Delta are expected to continue, with severe weather on the East Coast expected on Tuesday.
These major carriers are taking precautions. Hundreds of cancellations have already been issued on Tuesday morning, with more disruptions throughout the day.
United Airlines And American Airlines Are Issuing Flexible Rebooking Due To Severe East Coast Storms
A flood watch warning has been issued for New York and New Jersey for Tuesday. According to the National Weather Service, the advisory will remain in effect from 8 A.M. until later in the evening. Isolated tornadoes, strong winds and even hail are possibilities, along with flash flooding.
The New York disruptions will impact travel. On Tuesday, according to FlightAware, LaGuardia canceled 143 departures, along with 139 arrivals. John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport have also canceled hundreds of flights out of precaution due to the upcoming storms.
Both American Airlines and United Airlines have responded with flexible rebooking offers. American Airlines’ rebooking for several East Coast hubs is valid throughout July 21. On its travel alerts page, American Airlines wrote:
“When severe weather or other uncontrollable events impact your flight and travel dates, you may be able to change your trip with no change fee. We understand you may have questions about your upcoming travel. We’re working around the clock to care for you on your travel journey. If your flight is impacted, we’ll reach out via email and app notifications.”
United Airlines has also extended the offer for its East Coast hubs, also valid for July 21. United has confirmed that it will waive the change fees, but the new travel must be booked by July 23, 2026, to the same city and in the same cabin.

Along with United and American Airlines, Delta Air Lines is also extending a rebooking offer to passengers. Delta has been the airline most affected by the severe weather in New York, given that JFK and LGA are its major hubs.
Delta Air Lines Has Been The Carrier Most Affected By The Severe East Coast Weather
Delta Air Lines has seen cancellations increase in recent days due to disruptions in New York and at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
On Sunday, the airline hit 400 cancellations, followed by 140 canceled flights to start the week on Monday.
With more storms set for New York, the carrier has added both JFK and LGA to its flexible rebooking hubs for July 21 and July 22.

In a statement, Delta is encouraging customers to check frequently for updates throughout travel on July 21. The advisory is for those taking flights out of the major Northeast U.S. hubs. Delta wrote:
“To support customers during the inclement weather expected to affect the Northeastern region of the United States, travel to, from, or through the destinations listed below may be affected. Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute information about your flight plans, or get updates sent directly to your mobile device or by email with One-Time Notification.”
On Tuesday morning, Delta Air Lines had 127 canceled flights scheduled. The number is expected to increase steadily throughout the day, with ground stops anticipated nationwide.
United Airlines And American Airlines’ Current Delays And Cancellations
Both United and American Airlines’ cancellations are far less than those of Delta and JetBlue. For July 21, according to FlightAware, United had ten cancellations while American Airlines had nine. Both disruption numbers are expected to increase throughout the day.
