In recent days, Delta Air Lines has seen cancellations climb back up. On Sunday, the major U.S. airlines battled tough conditions, with ground stops leading to over 2,000 cancellations on U.S. flights. All major carriers were implicated. United Airlines faced a severe tech outage, while Delta currently has the most flight cancellations on July 19, hitting triple-digit numbers.

Delta’s current flight disruptions are largely due to severe weather at its major hubs in New York and Atlanta.

Delta Air Lines’ Cancellations Surged As Ground Stops Were Issued At Its Major Hubs

Delta Air Lines and the other major carriers faced several ground stops nationwide. Delta Air Lines was especially impacted, given its high volume of flights out of New York. The carrier faced ground stops at John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, all due to thunderstorms in the New York area.

As a result of the ground stop, passengers faced both cancellations and lengthy delays. At JFK, departure delays hit two hours due to the thunderstorms and flooding threats to New York.

Delta Air Lines was heavily impacted by the disruptions, completing July 18 with 338 flight cancellations, the second most worldwide, according to FlightAware. Delays were also high for the carrier at 958.

Due to the heavy flight disruptions nationwide, Delta Air Lines offered flexible rebooking at multiple hubs. Among the airports included its major hubs in New York.

Delta wrote, “To support during the forecasted thunderstorms affecting customers in the New York City area, travel to, from, or through the destinations listed below may be affected. Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute information about your flight plans, or get updates sent directly to your mobile device or by email with One-Time Notification.”

In addition to its rebooking for New York hubs, Delta extended the rebooking policy to hubs affected by air quality issues. Both rebooking offers were valid until July 18.

Online, reactions to the delays were mixed. Although there was a sense of appreciation for Delta employees going above and beyond for passengers, the reality was chaos, particularly for flights out of New York.

Aviation expert JonNYC wrote on X, “NY Airports absolutely beyond a mess today. I wonder if there are folks who are at risk now of missing the big game tomorrow as a result and what extreme measures they are undertaking to get to NY area right now.”

With disruptions causing crews to be timed out, several Delta employees stepped up during the delays. A traveler caught footage of one Delta pilot taking matters into his own hands.

A Delta Air Lines Pilot Helped To Load Bags On The Aircraft During Delays At ATL

The post has close to 10K likes in just one day. Flyers appreciated the efforts of a Delta pilot, in particular, Captain Paul. In the footage, the pilot is shown helping to load the bags on the flight during lengthy delays in Atlanta.

A passenger shared the footage, stating that the delays in Atlanta were over two hours on the flight. With crews unavailable, a pilot stepped up.

“Stuck in ATL right now with a flight that has been delayed more than two hours. They only found one poor guy to load our bags, so the pilot went out to help. I’ve never seen anything like that! Kudos to the one ramp agent and pilot, but who’s going to help us get off the gate? Edit: that is Captain Paul! Awesome team.”

The passenger’s footage of the pilot’s actions quickly gained traction online, drawing praise from other travelers during stressful times for both crews and passengers. Delta will need all the help it can get, as disruptions are expected to continue into Sunday.

Disruptions have continued for Delta. On Sunday morning, the airline had the most canceled flights worldwide, currently at 290. A major reason for Delta’s high volume of cancellations is ongoing disruptions at its major hubs: John F. Kennedy International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.
