Earlier in the week, the Federal Aviation Administration stopped flights at 13 major U.S. airports, as cancellations exceeded the 4,000 mark in just two days. Over the weekend, FAA stoppages have been limited, with the weather cooperating. Instead, a majority of the flight cancellations are coming from north of the border in Canada. Major Canadian airline WestJet suspended all flights on Sunday due to an ongoing strike.

Although U.S. flight disruptions, particularly cancellations, were lower on Saturday, ground stops may occur on Sunday. Delta Air Lines has issued warnings to customers for its major hubs in Atlanta and New York over the risk of thunderstorms.

The FAA Limited Ground Stops and Flight Cancellations Over The Weekend

There were 7,560 delays for flights within, into, or out of the United States on Saturday, according to FlightAware data. Following a busy week of cancellations and stoppages by the FAA, disruptions were tame nationwide, with 294 cancelled flights total in the U.S.

Although disruptions were low, Delta Air Lines ran into cancellation issues, finishing August 1 with the second most cancelled flights among all airlines, only behind the Canadian carrier, WestJet.

U.S. Airlines With The Most Cancelled Flights On August 1

Delta Air Lines did offer customers rebooking due to its higher number of cancellations. The airline experienced delays at its Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport hub due to thunderstorms and offered customers flexible rebooking.

The airline wrote on its travel alerts page, “When rebooked travel occurs on or before August 4, 2026, in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived. A fare difference may apply when the waiver is class to class restrictive and the original booking class is not maintained in the rebooked itinerary.”

Delta’s cancellations have continued on August 2, with an additional 35 cancelled flights. Among U.S. airlines, only JetBlue has more, currently at 59.

Meanwhile, the bulk of flight disruptions are coming from north of the border. The major Canadian airline WestJet is experiencing an increase in cancellations due to an ongoing strike with its flight attendants.

Cancellations Are On The Rise North Of The Border Due To A WestJet Strike

Currently, Calgary International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport have the most cancelled flights among all airports worldwide. Both airports are major hubs for WestJet. The carrier suspended operations on Sunday and has just confirmed that it still has not reached an agreement with its flight attendants.

The airline wrote on Sunday morning, “We are disappointed to share that due to labour disruption, WestJet flights have been suspended effective August 2, 2026, at 12:01 a.m. MDT. WestJet Encore flights continue to operate. We deeply regret the impact this is having on our guests’ travel plans.”

WestJet’s cancellations are expected to continue into next week, as customers are expected to face additional disruptions. The carrier has confirmed it will waive the change and cancellation fees. WestJet has extended this policy for all of its customers to August 5. The airline confirmed that the date may be pushed back, depending on the current strike status.

The Current Outlook Of Flight Disruptions Nationwide

As of early Sunday, there are 237 cancelled flights within, into, or out of the United States. John F. Kennedy International Airport currently has the most cancelled flights, with 12 departure cancellations along with 28 on arrivals.

U.S. Airports With The Most Departure Cancellations On August 2

New York airports may see a rise in disruptions on Sunday due to thunderstorms. As a precaution, Delta Air Lines is extending flexible rebooking at four airports, including Newark, NJ (EWR), White Plains, NY (HPN), New York-Kennedy, NY (JFK), New York-La Guardia, NY (LGA).

The carrier wrote on its travel alerts page, “To support during the forecasted thunderstorms affecting the New York City area, travel to, from, or through the destinations listed below may be affected. Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute information about your flight plans, or get updates sent directly to your mobile device or by email with One-Time Notification.”

Although FAA stoppages were limited on Saturday, there is the potential for ground stops and ground delays on Sunday. For now, most cancellations are coming from Canada due to unresolved WestJet strike issues.
