A powerful earthquake struck Japan a few hours ago at 4:27 PM local time. A 7.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan. The earthquake caused the partial collapse of Eon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima town.
Even as rescue operations are underway, several people are feared trapped, and authorities are expecting casualties. NHK, a Japanese media outlet, has reported over 50 injuries already. Many traveling on a high-speed train have also sustained injuries.
7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan, With Several Injured
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), residents must be prepared for more tremors for the next week. The 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of ten kilometers. The Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has sent 3,600 Self-Defense Force personnel for emergency rescue operations.
While rescuers are attempting to enter the rubble, the destruction caused by the earthquake-triggered explosion is hindering their progress. Approximately 300,000 residents have been instructed to evacuate to a safe evacuation center.
