Buc-ee’s is generating mixed reviews for its recent lawsuit involving a local Mini-Mart in Ohio. Recently, Buc-ee’s has made a string of questionable decisions. Among them was disappointing thousands of Americans with a lack of response over an “F” rating. More recently, the travel center was applauded for a new ban that customers were made aware of prior to entering, prohibiting pets from entering the store unless they are service animals.
Its recent lawsuits, however, have hurt its reputation. Not only have customers taken exception, but even high-profile names on television are putting the travel center giant on the spot, questioning a lawsuit that they keep on winning.
Buc-ee’s is quickly becoming known as the king of logo infringement lawsuits. However, a recent lawsuit against a Mini-Mart in Ohio, filed by Buc-ee’s, has generated backlash not only among customers in Ohio but also from popular figures like John Oliver.
On an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the popular TV host called out the company for its aggressive trademark policy, stating that the Texas-founded giant is “outright bullying” other companies. According to Oliver’s assessment, the companies are typically losing legal battles to Buc-ee’s to the lack of funds and resources.
Oliver revealed, “It turns out Buc-ee’s loves to sue other companies, particularly those with animal mascots. Oh come on, Buc-ee’s! You don’t own all cartoon rodents. Buc-ee’s constant complaint that no one else has the right to use animal logos” as “absurd.””
Oliver then joked about the idea of introducing his own line of merchandise, similar to the Buc-ee’s logo.
The TV host added, “We very much have the will to get into a fight with Buc-ee’s.”
In its latest lawsuit, Buc-ee’s is now going after Beaver’s Mini-Mart, a location that was established back in 1989.

Buc-ee’s claims that Beaver’s Mini-Mart logo has too many similar qualities, including a smiling beaver cartoon that matches a hat. The logo is featured on billboards, signs, and other products in the store. Buc-ee’s took exception to the logo after it opened its first Ohio store in Huber Heights back in April.
In the lawsuit obtained by the Dayton Daily News, Buc-ee’s claims that the logo may cause confusion among customers, who may perceive a connection between the two stores.
“Defendant’s unauthorized use of defendant’s marks is likely to cause confusion among consumers,” the lawsuit states. “Consumers are likely to perceive a connection or association as to the source, sponsorship, or affiliation of the parties’ products and services, when in fact none exists, given the similarity of the parties’ logos, trade channels, and consumer bases.”
The Mini-Mart location is roughly 16 miles away from the new Buc-ee’s, around 20 minutes away. The lawsuit has caused a stir not only in the media, but with locals in the Ohio area as well.

Locals from Miami Valley, Ohio, are reacting to the lawsuit. One resident took exception to the fact that Beavercreek is located near the two, and that the Mini-Mart logo is on trend for the area.
“As someone from the area, the gall of them coming here and then suing local companies that have beavers in the logo… When they’re RIGHT next to a town called Beavercreek…. What were they expecting? Horses? (Not that it would stop them based on their other lawsuits).”
Another resident from the town shared a similar opinion, stating that the beaver logo is used by several other companies.
“Live in the town in question. Every business in this town has a beaver in their logo…. How is this going to pan out?
Given the other reactions, Buc-ee’s has lost some of its popularity over the string of infringement lawsuits. The hope for some, is that Buc-ee’s faces scrutiny from other companies for similar reasons in the future.
