As of late Monday morning, Delta Air Lines’ major hub, LaGuardia Airport, has the most flight cancellations out of all airports worldwide. Now, with upcoming thunderstorms, the hub is bracing for flight disruptions.

Other New York airports are also expected to see flight disruptions rise, with the potential for the Federal Aviation Administration to ground all flights over the next 48 hours due to the stormy weather.

U.S. Airports With The Most Departure Cancellations On July 27

Delta Air Lines has already taken action. Having already recently faced hundreds of last-minute cancellations linked to nationwide staffing shortages, the carrier is offering passengers at four hubs in New York flexible rebooking and waiving change fees. Cancellations are expected to rise throughout the day and into Tuesday at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Delta Is Offering Flexible Rebooking Due To Potential New York City Weather Disruptions

New York State is expecting heavy rain on Tuesday through Thursday, with the potential of flash flooding. New York had a nice stretch of weather throughout the weekend. However, with the humidity rising, heavy rain and thunderstorms have been announced for the majority of the week. Strong winds have also been forecast for Tuesday.

Travel across New York is expected to be affected, with the potential of a ground stop at major airports in the state. Just last week, the Federal Aviation Administration halted flights at John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, resulting in hundreds of cancellations and thousands of delays for Delta.

The carrier is now warning customers in advance of potential weather-related disruptions on July 27 and July 28. The carrier is offering passengers flexible rebooking at the following hubs: Newark, NJ (EWR), White Plains, NY (HPN), New York-Kennedy, NY (JFK), and New York-La Guardia, NY (LGA).

Delta Air Lines updated its travel alerts page, notifying customers that it will waive the change fees, though the new ticket must be reissued by July 31, 2026. Delta wrote:

“To support customers during the forecasted summer weather affecting the New York City area, travel to, from, or through the destinations listed below may be affected. Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute information about your flight plans, or get updates sent directly to your mobile device or by email with One-Time Notification. When rebooked travel occurs on or before July 31, 2026 in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived. A fare difference may apply when the waiver is class to class restrictive and the original booking class is not maintained in the rebooked itinerary.”

Just last week, passengers reported delays and cancellations on Delta flights at several New York hubs. Travelers should prepare for significant wait times for upcoming flights out of the four major New York hubs in the coming days.

How Passengers Responded To Delta’s Recent Disruptions In New York

Traveler Baline Nelson was one of the many passengers who experienced delays at LaGuardia. On X, Nelson stated that the same flight was delayed four times before finally being canceled.

“Very disappointed in @Delta today. Our flight out of LaGuardia got delayed 4 times until ultimately being canceled. Then they couldn’t fly us out for two days, and didn’t provide any hotel or food vouchers. And the icing on the cake, they put Emily’s luggage on a DIFFERENT plane!”

With a difficult summer for East Coast flights, Delta Air Lines will be looking to minimize the disruptions in the coming days. Cancellations and delays are expected to increase throughout the day and into Tuesday.

Delta Air Lines’ Current Delays And Cancellations

According to FlightAware data, there were 1,483 delays within, into, or out of the United States on Monday, along with 120 cancellations. A majority of the canceled flights are currently due to disruptions at LaGuardia Airport. The hub has 34 departure cancellations and 31 arrival cancellations.

Delta Air Lines’ cancellations are still low for the time being, at three. However, the number is expected to increase throughout the day as JFK disruptions are also set to rise.
