Is United MileagePlus Actually Worth It in 2026?

United Airlines flies to more international destinations than any other U.S. airline, giving travelers access to hundreds of locations through its own network and more than 26 Star Alliance member airlines. Its free MileagePlus loyalty program has long been a popular way to earn miles towards flights, upgrades, and other travel perks.

But MileagePlus looks a little different in 2026. Earlier this year, United introduced some of the biggest changes the MileagePlus program has seen in years, rewarding members who carry a co-branded United credit card while reducing earning opportunities for many travelers who don’t. The changes have sparked plenty of discussion among frequent flyers, especially those who feel the program now favors United’s most loyal customers.

Here’s a closer look at what MileagePlus offers, what changed in 2026, and whether the program is still worth your loyalty.

United MileagePlus is United Airlines’ free frequent flyer program that allows members to earn miles on eligible flights with United and its Star Alliance partners, as well as 18 non-alliance members such as Hawaiian Airlines and Emirates. Members can also earn miles through everyday activities like using a co-branded United credit card, shopping through the MileagePlus Shopping portal, dining at participating restaurants, booking hotels, renting cars, and more.

Unlike some airline loyalty programs, MileagePlus miles do not expire as long as your account remains open. Once you’ve earned enough miles, they can be redeemed for award flights on United or partner airlines, seat upgrades, vacation packages, hotels, rental cars, merchandise, and other travel-related rewards.

Members who don’t have enough miles for a full award ticket can also use United’s Money + Miles option on eligible bookings. Using United MileagePlus points for a free flight may be easier than many travelers expect.

For travelers who fly United regularly, the program also includes four Premier elite status levels that unlock additional benefits such as complimentary upgrades on select flights, free checked bags, priority boarding, preferred seating, and bonus miles on eligible airfare.

United MileagePlus underwent one of its biggest overhauls in years when new earning and redemption rules took effect on April 2, 2026. The changes reward travelers who carry a co-branded United credit card while reducing benefits for many members who don’t.

For frequent United flyers, the updates could mean earning miles faster and spending fewer miles on award flights. For occasional travelers or those who don’t want another airline credit card, however, the changes make it harder to build up rewards through everyday flying alone.

The Biggest MileagePlus Changes In 2026

  • General members without a United credit card now earn 3 miles per dollar on eligible airfare instead of five.
  • Members with a qualifying United credit card generally earn 6 miles per dollar, with Premier members earning even more.
  • Cardholders now receive automatic discounts on award flights, starting at 10% and increasing to 15% for eligible Premier members.
  • Travelers booking Basic Economy without elite status or a qualifying United credit card no longer earn redeemable miles.
  • Families can now pool miles with up to five other people, making it easier to save for group trips.
  • Children linked to a qualifying cardholder’s account can also receive the same mileage earning rates and award discounts as the primary cardholder.

The new earning structure varies significantly depending on a member’s status and whether they carry a qualifying United credit card. United offers several co-branded credit cards, each with different benefits and annual fees depending on how often you fly and what perks matter most.

Not every traveler will get the same value from United MileagePlus in 2026. The program now rewards loyalty more than ever, making it especially beneficial for people who fly United regularly or use one of the airline’s co-branded credit cards.

Travelers who fly United often stand to benefit the most. Earning Premier status unlocks perks such as complimentary upgrades on select flights, free checked bags, priority boarding, preferred seating, and bonus miles. Since MileagePlus also lets members earn and redeem miles across 26 Star Alliance airlines and 18 non-alliance member airlines, frequent international travelers have even more opportunities to use the program.

United Credit Card Holders

The biggest winners in 2026 are members with a qualifying United credit card. Cardholders generally earn more miles on eligible United flights, receive automatic discounts on award tickets, and may also enjoy additional benefits such as free checked bags, priority boarding, travel credits, and opportunities to earn Premier Qualifying Points toward elite status.

Families And Group Travelers

MileagePlus is also a strong option for families because of its free mileage pooling feature, which allows up to five people to combine miles for award travel. Eligible cardholders can also link their children’s MileagePlus accounts so they receive the same enhanced earning rates and award discounts as the primary cardholder.

So, Is United MileagePlus Worth It In 2026?

The answer depends largely on how you travel. If you fly United several times a year, frequently travel with Star Alliance partners, or carry a qualifying United credit card, MileagePlus remains one of the stronger airline loyalty programs available. The program offers faster mileage earnings for many cardholders, discounted award flights, family pooling, and valuable elite status perks that can make your rewards go further.

For travelers who only fly United occasionally, the equation is a little different. The reduced earning rates for general members, combined with the elimination of mileage earnings on many Basic Economy tickets, mean it can take much longer to accumulate meaningful rewards. Without a United credit card or regular travel on the airline, the program doesn’t offer the same value as it once did.

Ultimately, MileagePlus is best suited for travelers who regularly fly United or take advantage of the airline’s broader rewards ecosystem, while casual flyers may find another loyalty program that offers better value.

So, is United MileagePlus actually worth it in 2026? For many frequent United flyers, the answer is yes. For occasional travelers, however, the recent changes make it worth comparing other airline loyalty programs before making MileagePlus your go-to rewards program.

TheTravel reached out to United for comment on the 2026 MileagePlus changes and the program’s benefits for travelers but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
