This week, a Royal Caribbean passenger aboard the Allure of the Seas ship shared now-viral footage of a major leak in their cabin that had caused intense flooding on Tuesday, July 28. Many were alarmed, worried that it could be a sign of a more serious issue. This incident comes less than a week after an undisclosed malfunction that delayed Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas.
Allure of the Seas departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on July 25 and is set to return there on Aug. 2. For those who are scheduled to go on this Eastern Caribbean cruise or are keeping a close eye on upcoming sailings, here’s the status of the ship’s current operations and what the affected passengers have revealed about their unfortunate experience.
Royal Caribbean’s Allure Of The Seas’ Status Following Viral Cabin Flood Incident
According to the cruise tracking platform, Cruise Mapper, Allure of the Seas continues to sail as scheduled following the cabin leak incident. It is currently cruising in the North West Atlantic Ocean, heading from St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to Perfect Day CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island destination on Berry Islands in the Bahamas (docking Aug. 1), and the cruise’s final destination before returning to Fort Lauderdale.
In the Instagram footage posted by Dominic Arcangelo yesterday, water can be seen heavily pouring from the ceiling like rain, with water pooling on the cabin floor about 1 to 2 inches deep. A woman can also be heard outside the hallway, saying, “I can’t get to the phone; it’s in there… We just came to our room and found this.”
In the comments, Jessica Cunningham, who introduced herself as the woman in yellow in the video and aunt of Arcangelo, said that the flooded room was 12539. It is a standard interior stateroom located on Deck 12. She added that the clip was filmed by a neighbor and that her husband’s phone, which was left charging inside the cabin, was “ruined.”
“My husband’s phone was on the charger and it was ruined,” Cunningham wrote in the comments. “My phone’s charging port now has water damage from packing the room out. It won’t hold a charge. So we are dealing with that personal property issue.”
TheTravel reached out to Royal Caribbean for more information on the incident, but did not receive a response by the time of publication. However, Cunningham shared some insights into the cause of the leak.
What Caused The Cabin Leak On Royal Caribbean’s Allure Of The Seas
When asked what caused the leak in their room, Cunningham said it was a “jacuzzi leak.” While Royal Caribbean’s compensation details are not publicly disclosed, Cunningham told commenters that they “moved rooms and packed out all of our things. Put all the clothes in trash bags for laundry.”
Despite the inconvenience, they did not let the unfortunate flooding ruin their anniversary trip and their “mentality” was that the situation was eventually handled anyway. However, the whole incident drew various discussions about Royal Caribbean cruises in the comments.
What Cruisers Are Saying About Allure Of The Seas‘ Flooded Cabin Incident
Arcangelo’s video has been watched more than 6.5 million times since posting, with thousands of comments about cruise safety fears, as well as several opinions on proper compensation.
|
– “Honestly I’d feel like I was sitting in the doomed titanic at this point and fighting to get to top deck on the first lifeboats.” |
|
– “Reason number 562 why I won’t ever go on a cruise!” |
|
– “There is nothing they could tell me. I need a full refund and I will have credits for the rest of my life, free cruise.” |
|
– “Who ever had that cabin deserves to be moved to a suite now! And unlimited laundry service to dry out their clothes.” |
|
– “Just grab your wine and head to the pool. Your cruise has been comped and you’ll likely be gifted another one for the inconvenience. Always see the blessing in the midst of mess.” |
|
– “I got 3 cruises booked. This ain’t stopping me!” |
Others noted how Royal Caribbean was not as criticized in the comments as Carnival Cruise Line would be in the same situation. In June, TheTravel reported on Carnival’s unexpected response to “thousands of dollars” worth of belongings damaged in a brown-water cabin flooding. Royal Caribbean passengers have lauded crew members for their swift actions on these cases.
How Royal Caribbean Handles Compensation For Cabin Leaks
According to different passenger accounts, Royal Caribbean handles compensation for cabin leaks and flooding on a case-by-case basis through Guest Services. They usually offer immediate onboard credit ($150 to $400+), a room change, and potential future cruise credits depending on the severity of the disruption.
Some claim that they have been offered 15% to 25% off a future cruise or even 50% for major room damages or losses. It is best to document the incident by taking photos with timestamps and even receipts for damaged items if applicable. Passengers are advised to report the issue right away by notifying Guest Services, the housekeeping manager, or your suite concierge.
