Unexpected airline charges can make a busy day of travel difficult, particularly when the fee doesn’t correspond with the traveler’s reservation or baggage allowance. That’s unfortunately what one United Airlines traveler said happened while checking in for a recent flight.

According to a Reddit post, the United app displayed a $250 fee for a bag the passenger said should have been included at no cost. As the passenger explained what happened to them, other United customers began sharing similar experiences. Following United’s recent nationwide tech outage, there are now concerns that this unusually high fee might be linked to another widespread system fault.

A United Airlines Passenger Was Shown A $250 Baggage Fee Despite Elite Status

A recent post on the r/unitedairlines subreddit states that the passenger, who was a Premier Platinum member, noticed the unusually high baggage fee when checking in online for a domestic flight from Dallas to Chicago using the United app.

At first, the traveler attempted to restart the app and finish the check-in process without entering any luggage details. Yet when they went back to the baggage section, the price of $250 still showed up, and it was also shown in the reservation’s general baggage allowance and pricing information.

“Went to check in for my DFW-ORD flight tomorrow and was met with a $250 bag fee. … Finished checking in without bags and tried adding after — still shows it — even under the generic baggage allowance and pricing menu,” they wrote.

The passenger’s itinerary had already been affected. Their earlier flight from San Antonio to Houston was delayed by more than five hours, so United arranged for the traveler to take a direct flight from American Airlines to Dallas. The flight to Chicago was still included in the original itinerary.

The traveler said online customer service was unable to identify the problem. However, after arriving at the airport, they learned that the charge was caused by a supposed glitch linked to their earlier rebooking from the United flight to the American Airlines flight. The $250 fee was then removed.

“As expected, it’s a glitch when they have to move someone to AA (agent said AA only),” the traveler wrote in an update.

They added that the employee had already submitted two separate reports about similar incidents involving other passengers.

Other United Passengers Have Reported Similar In-App Glitches

Around two weeks before the Dallas passenger’s experience, travelers flying from San Francisco to Chicago said United attempted to charge them $250 for each of their two standard bags. The traveler said neither bag was oversized, but the incorrect price appeared during online check-in and then again at an airport kiosk.

After receiving a refund for the initial charge, the passenger said it took three airport employees to apply the correct fee manually.

“I checked in online yesterday, and United charged me $250 per bag — not oversized, just normal bags. I got that refunded, but the customer associate couldn’t charge the normal $50 per bag price. She instructed me to check in person at the airport. I attempted to do the bags at the kiosk and … $250 per bag. We had to talk to three associates before they could manually fix it, but as we were walking away, we saw this happen to another passenger trying to check a bag,” they wrote on Reddit.

The passenger concluded by asking if the situation had happened to anyone else.

A commenter on the same post replied, saying United had also quoted them $250 for their first checked bag after the airline’s automated phone recording stated that the fee should be much lower.

“I’m on the phone with United right now. They’re trying to charge me $250 for the first checked bag. Not a system error. A recording told me it was $40. The system wouldn’t allow me to prepay online, so I transferred to a person. She is telling me that the charge is $250. It would be less expensive to ship it UPS,” they wrote.

Another Redditor reported an almost identical situation about two months earlier while checking in for a United codeshare flight operated by SkyWest, which recently faced cancellations due to extreme heat at one of its major operating bases. The traveler said the app and a customer service representative both quoted $250 for one standard bag weighing under 40 pounds.

In a later comment, the passenger stated that United eventually reduced the fee to $50, saying, “Baggage counter employee argued with corporate and got it to be $50. Bag almost missed flight, but all was good in the end.”

United’s Standard Checked Bag Fees Are Much Lower

A $250 fee wouldn’t usually apply to one standard domestic checked bag. United directs passengers to its baggage calculator because charges can vary by route, fare, status, and when the bag is purchased.

For tickets purchased on or after April 3, 2026, the carrier states that standard bag fees start at $50 when paid in the airport lobby and $75 when a bag is checked at the gate.

The fees may be higher when luggage exceeds the airline’s weight or size limits or when a traveler checks additional bags. This may explain why the system displayed $250. However, the passengers involved said their luggage was within the normal weight limits.

While they ultimately avoided the three-digit fee, several said correcting it required additional conversations and manual intervention. Until United identifies the cause, travelers may want to arrive at the airport early just in case they encounter any issues.
