Global Affairs Canada updated its travel advisory page for the United States on August 3. In its latest update, the government agency added information in its natural disasters and climate section. New additions were made related to the Spokane County fires in Washington state.
In its advisory, Global Affairs Canada explains that the wildfires have spread to multiple areas, including Old Trails, Fairview, and Autumn Lane Fires. In response, evacuations have taken place, while air quality in the region remains a cause for concern.
Global Affairs Canada wrote in its update, “Multiple wildfires are affecting Spokane County in Washington State, including the Old Trails, Fairview and Autumn Lane Fires. Local authorities have issued evacuation orders across parts of Spokane County. Many buildings have been destroyed. Air quality across the region may be affected by wildfire smoke and ash.”

In the latest update, Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels announced that authorities arrested a suspect for arson in connection with the wildfires that started in the northwest of downtown Spokane.
On Monday, evacuation levels were downgraded in certain areas, including the Fairview Fire and the Old Trails Fire. However, other warnings remain the same, with Level 3 “Go Now” evacuations in place.
Global Affairs Canada’s Other Recent Update For Travel To The United States
Prior to its wildfire warning for Washington state, Canada had updated its U.S. travel advisory on July 20 with strict border entry rules. In its other update last month, Global Affairs Canada reminded travelers that they “cannot intervene” during an entry or exit incident in the United States.
“Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders and the Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet entry or exit requirements for the United States. Individual border agents often have significant discretion in making those determinations. U.S. authorities strictly enforce entry requirements. Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices. Comply and be forthcoming in all interactions with border authorities. If you are denied entry, you could be detained while awaiting deportation,” Global Affairs Canada wrote.
Global Affairs has other notable warnings for entry and exit warnings for travel to the United States, including advisories on electronic devices. Global Affairs reminds travelers that U.S. border agents don’t need a reason to search devices.
“U.S. border agents are entitled to search your electronic devices, such as your phones, computers or tablets, when you are entering the United States. They don’t need to provide a reason when requesting a password to open your device. If you refuse, they may seize your device. The border agent could also delay your travel or deny entry if you are not a U.S. citizen,” Global Affairs Canada adds.
Canadians must comply when entering or exiting the United States. Additionally, with the latest warning, travelers are being asked to avoid Spokane County or take the necessary precautions during the severe wildfires.
